Med Programme continues tradition of European cooperation programmes (previously titled Interreg). It takes place within the objective ‘European Territorial Cooperation’ in the period from 2007 to 2013. The Programme includes coastal and Mediterranean regions of nine EU member states and it has budget of over € 250 billion. The partnership is enlarged by participation of Mediterranean countries which are candidates or potential candidates for the European Union.
Its priorities are as follows: - To improve competitiveness of the area in a way that guarantees the growth and employment for future generations (Lisbon Strategy). - To improve territorial cohesion and protection of environment according to sustainable development logic (Gothenburg Strategy).
Eligible Area: Between 2007 and 2013, trans-national cooperation in Med Programme will be based essentially on previous areas of cooperation, putting together Medocc and Archimed in one area. Cyprus and Slovenia, member states as of 2004, will join them. Followed by the European Commission Decision of 31 October 2006, which listed eligible regions and areas for trans-national standards of European territorial cooperation objectives, Med Programme included the following areas:
Cyprus: entire state; France: 4 regions - Corse, Languedoc-Roussillon, Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur, Rhône-Alpes; Greece: entire state; Italy: 18 regions : Abruzzo, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Molise, Umbria, Piedmonte, Sardinia, Sicily, Tuscany, Veneto; Malta: entire state; Portugal: 2 regions - Algarve, Alentejo; Slovenia: entire state; Spain: 6 autonomous regions - Andalusia, Aragon, Catalonia, Balearic islands, Murcia, Valencia – and two autonomous cities - Ceuta and Melilla; Great Britain: 1 region of economic programming - Gibraltar
Participation of ineligible Med areas is possible out of these regions, but it is limited. Moreover, Med Programme has invited Mediterranean candidate countries or potential candidate countries for the European Union. Its cooperation area includes Croatia as well as Montenegro from the moment the Programme starts.
Med Programme finances the projects operating in specific fields: Priorities of Reduction and Specific Objectives.
The Programme is managed by the system composed of several units: Management structures.
